Trommel screens are rotating cylindrical screens that separate material by size, commonly used for soil, compost, aggregates and demolition waste. Drum diameter, length, screen media and slope control throughput and cut point. Mobile and stationary models work well with crawler loaders; choose based on feed rate, maximum feed size and desired fines. They offer simple mechanics, high capacity and easy serviceability for continuous screening jobs.
Check drum diameter and length, available screen aperture sizes, rated throughput (tph), maximum feed size, power type (diesel/electric), condition of bearings and drive components, wear on liners and screens, and service history.
Verify hopper height and feed opening, clearances for loader buckets, whether a feeder or conveyor is needed, and that the feed rate matches the trommel’s capacity to avoid bridging or overloading.
Confirm transport weight and dimensions, if conveyors or drums must be removed or folded, secure tie-down points, required permits for oversize loads, and use of a lowboy or flatbed. Drain fluids and secure loose parts.
Keep spare screen panels/punch plates, drum liners, bearings and seals, drive belts/chains, sprockets, hydraulic hoses and common fasteners on hand to minimize downtime.
Daily cleanouts and inspections, regular bearing lubrication, check and tighten fasteners, monitor screen wear and replace panels, inspect hydraulic systems and change filters/oils per manufacturer intervals.
