Parallel lathes are traditional machine-shop lathes with a bed whose ways run parallel to the spindle axis. They handle turning, facing, boring, threading and taper work on shafts and cylindrical parts in manual or semi-automatic setups. Common in metalworking shops, they vary by swing, center distance and spindle speed, and accept many chucks, toolposts and accessories for flexible, precision shop work.
Check bed wear and straightness, spindle bearings and runout, headstock and gearbox noise, leadscrew and carriage play, condition of chuck and jaws, powertrain and controls, and maintenance records. Do a test cut if possible.
Use a transport company experienced with machine tools. Secure the lathe to a heavy pallet or skid, protect ways and spindle, remove tooling and fluids, block moving parts, and insure the shipment. Confirm weight and lifting points for cranes.
Daily: clean chips and lubricate ways and lead screw. Weekly/monthly: check gibs and backlash, inspect belts and electrical connections. Periodically: change gearbox oil, service spindle bearings, realign headstock and tailstock as needed.
