Inspect the hopper for rust and cracks, check the agitator and metering mechanism for wear, verify calibration controls work, and confirm mounting compatibility with your tractor or carrier. Ask for maintenance records and test-run it loaded if possible.

Match hopper capacity and spread width to the acreage and application rate you plan to cover. Choose tractor-mounted or trailed models for larger farms and tow-behind or ATV units for smaller areas or spot applications.

Provide dimensions, weight, and whether the spreader can be partially disassembled. Secure internal parts and drain any liquids. Use a carrier experienced with agricultural equipment and ensure proper crating or tie-downs to prevent damage.

Clean after each use to remove corrosive residues, grease moving parts, inspect bearings and chains, and replace worn components. Calibrate regularly by testing application rate on known distances and adjust the metering settings according to the fertilizer type.
